Billionaire Allen Stanford invests in West Indies cricket
West Indies cricket team will gain a great boost when billionaire Allen Stanford invests $100m (£49.6m) in them over the next three years.
Allen Stanford, who is a Texas businessman, but who lives in Antigua, wants to bring cricket in the area he is in into the 21st century, and he said: "We are stuck in the 1950s and 60s. We can't allow ourselves to stay stuck forever."
Part of Allen Stanford's investment will pay for the second Stanford 20/20 tournament, which will feature Cuba for the first time. A total of 21 competing Caribbean nations will take part.
Funding will go to each Caribbean cricket team, including Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, to help them get ready for the tournament.
The Stanford 20/20 will be held from 25 January to 24 February 2008, with the winners collecting $1m from a total prize fund of $2.9m.
"I have committed my resources and I believe that within the next three years we will have a world beating West Indies team again," Allen Stanford said.
