Spanish driver Carlos Sainz first in car section of Dakar Rally
Spanish rally driver Carlos Sainz was first in the car section and Portuguese rider Helder Rodrigues claimed the motorbike honours in the second stage of the Dakar Rally.
Carlos Sainz, 42, who drove a Volkswagen, finished the mountainous stage in a time of 59 minutes, 26 seconds and came home ahead of four Mitsubishis, led by Luc Alphand who was 29 seconds behind, and Joan Nani Roma was in third place.
Helder Rodrigues finished in 1:02.44, more than a minute in front of Ruben Faria and this result moves Rodrigues ahead of the other motorbike rider at the top of the overall standings.
"It was a magnificent special stage today, I didn't have the slightest problem," said Helder Rodrigues, and he added:
"In my own mind, I knew I had to attack early to get a stage win, but really thought Saturday was my chance, but this is great."
Carlos Sainz is now in second position in the overall car standings and first-stage winner Carlos Sousa, who finished ninth on Sunday, kept the lead.
