Sebastien Loeb more hopeful after Marcus Gronholm's crash
French rally driver Sebastien Loeb is more optimistic about getting a fourth straight world rally title after championship leader Marcus Gronholm experienced a crash in the race in Hokkaido, Japan.
Sebastien Loeb can beat Marcus Gronholm in the rally drivers' standings if he manages to finish fourth or higher than this, and on the opening day he came second behind Finnish driver Mikko Hirvonen.
Marcus Gronholm ran into big problems when he lost control of his car during the fourth stage, and then slid down a bank before crashing into a tree stump.
This means that even if mechanics can repair the damage to his Ford before Saturday's second leg, the time penalties for missing six stages would leave him behind in the score.
Sebastien Loeb had already reduced the gap in the Championship race to four points with victories one after the other in Catalunya and Corsica and a win in Japan would give him a six-point advantage over Marcus Gronholm as they go forward to the last but one round in Ireland in November.
