Marcus Gronholm crashes at Rally of Australia
Rally driver Marcus Gronholm's World Championship hopes spoiled because he crashed on the first full day of the Rally of Australia.
Marcus Gronholm, who needs a top-four close to be in with a chance of overtaking Sebastien Loeb, was in the lead overnight after winning the first two stages but he crashed his Ford on Friday's first stage and dropped to 40th before battling his way back up to 18th.
Marcus Gronholm said: "I made a stupid mistake and I'm so disappointed."
Fellow Finnish driver Mikko Hirvonen leads by 25.8 seconds from Petter Solberg.
Marcus Gronholm, who trails Sebastien Loeb by 25 points with three races to go, lost far too much time after he needed a new gearbox.
Marcus Gronholm said: "We had so much dust in the car that I couldn't breathe and couldn't see.
"My eyes hurt and I also hurt my back trying to push the car over. Now I will just try to finish and score points for the team in the manufacturers' championship."
