Giniel De Villiers wins eighth stage of Dakar Rally
South African rally driver Giniel De Villiers gave an impressive performance in the cars race of the Dakar Rally on Sunday when he won the eighth stage.
Giniel De Villiers, who was driving a Volkswagen, came in ahead of the French duo Stephane Peterhansel and Luc Alphand on the 626km stage from Atar to Tichit.
Marc Coma, from Spain, won the motorbikes stage in front of French rider Cyril Despres and the Norwegian Pal Anders Ullevalseter.
Marc Coma leads the overall bikes race with Cyril Despres in second place and David Casteu in third position.
On the most difficult day of the event so far, Giniel De Villiers' Volkswagen teammate Carlos Sainz dr had to pull out after suffering power steering problems.
Giniel De Villiers, who had also won the seventh stage on Friday, finished six and a half minutes ahead of the field to lead Mitsubishi's Stephane Peterhansel by half an hour in the overall.
"In the overall rankings, a 30-minute lead does not mean much," said Giniel De Villiers and he added: "We saw today with Carlos Sainz that problems can be costly really quick."
