Finnish driver Marcus Gronholm out of Rally of Sardinia
Finnish driver Marcus Gronholm's chance of winning the Rally of Sardinia came to an end on Saturday when the former world champion hit a rock and crashed out.
Marcus Gronholm had been leading in his Ford Focus by 40 seconds before the accident during stage eight but the oil leak it caused ended his rally.
With Marcus Gronholm out, Frenchman Sebastien Loeb went into the lead, almost two minutes clear of his nearest rival.
Sebastien Loeb, who heads the championship standings in his Citroen, is aiming for a fifth successive rally win and he seems certain of victory unless he suffers a similar problem to Marcus Gronholm.
Ford team director Malcolm Wilson said Marcus Gronholm's accident was a big disappointment.
"Everything was going to plan and Marcus was controlling his pace according to Sebastien Loeb's split times," said Malcolm Wilson.
"On the positive side, the performance of the Focus has been the best we have had all season and we have seen that it is good on the rough and difficult stages," Malcolm Wilson added.
Mikko Hirvonen, Marcus Gronholm's fellow countryman, is in second place and Daniel Sordo and Gianluigi Galli were left to battle it out for the final podium spot.
