Dakar Rally organisers say the 2009 rally will be in South America

rally The 2009 Dakar Rally will be staged in South America for the first time, its organisers say and will take place next January.

The 9,000km loop course for the Dakar Rally will begin and come to an end in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Dakar Rally begins on 3 January, and contestants will race south to Patagonia, going into the Andes Mountains as well as passing through Chile's Atacama desert, before the finale on the 18th of the month.

This year's Dakar Rally wasn't held following the deaths of four French tourists who were murdered in Mauritania in December.

The organisers of the Dakar Rally, the Amaury Sport Organisation, had stated that there had been "direct threats against the race issued by terrorist groups".

Competitors who wish to take part in the Dakar Rally 2009 will be able to sign up for it from 15 May.

Dominique Serieys, head of Mitsubishi Motorsport, said: "It's good news, one month after the cancellation of the 2008 rally."
