525 teams for 2007 Dakar Rally
A record 525 teams are ready to participate in the 2007 Dakar Rally, a 4,918-mile race of endurance over 15 stages which starts in Portugal and ends in Senegal.
Mitsubishi driver Luc Alphand will be hoping to defend his title but is likely to have a battle with a strong Volkswagen rival.
Safety will be a main consideration for rally organisers because two children and a competitor were killed last year.
The 2007 Dakar Rally race commences in Lisbon on Saturday and will finish in Dakar on 21 January.
Mitsubishi have been the winners of eight of the last 10 races with former skiing champion Luc Alphand winning his maiden victory last January.
"I feel really good. I know we are coming here as the favourites and think it's possible to do it again this year," said Frenchman Luc Alphand.
