Scottish racing driver Dario Franchitti wins Indianapolis 500
Scottish racing driver Dario Franchitti has won the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500, although the race had to be stopped due to the heavy rainfall and was ended after just 165 of the 200 scheduled laps.
Because the cars reach speeds of 220mph, as a precaution they are not allowed to race when it rains. Dario Franchitti was in the lead when the race was halted and so was declared the winner.
Dario Franchitti, who became the first Scottish driver to win the race since Jim Clark in 1965, said proudly: "I can hardly believe it,
"Who could have thought it? Now I know what it means to win this race.
"We cut a tyre on some debris and had to make a pit stop on lap 143. I was trying to save fuel but when it went green, I had to go.
"I can't believe it. I have to thank my whole team. This is awesome. To be a member of this club is fantastic."
Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan had been in the lead before the first time the race was stopped due to rain, but the weather got better and allowed Dario Franchitti to become the new leader.
The race was temporarily halted when Dario Franchitti's team-mate Marco Andretti was in a car crash but then the rain came back in force and there was no option but to end the event.
