NASCAR champion driver Benny Parsons dies of lung cancer
NASCAR champion Benny Parsons died on Tuesday aged-65, from lung cancer complications in Charlotte, N.C, his son Keith said.
Benny Parsons had been in hospital in Charlotte since December 26.
Former taxi-driver Benny Parsons had been diagnosed with cancer in his left lung in July after he had experienced breathing problems.
Benny Parsons had quit the habit of smoking in 1978 and is reported to have said: "The first thing everyone asks me is, 'Are you a smoker?' The answer is that I smoked my last cigarette way back in 1978 and since then I've hated being around smoking."
Benny Parsons received intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments and was declared "cancer-free" in October but the treatment cost him the use of his left lung and he was hospitalised in December when doctors found a blood clot in his right lung.
Benny Parsons had been moved to intensive care shortly after his admission, and he stayed there in an induced-coma until his death.
Benny Parsons retired from racing in 1988 and moved into broadcasting, spending the last six years as a commentator on NBC and TNT.
Benny Parsons was one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers and had been inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994.
