Suzuki motorbike racer Chris Vermeulen wins at Le Mans

vermeulen Suzuki motorbike rider Chris Vermeulen made his debut MotoGP win in a very wet French Grand Prix at Le Mans.

Marco Melandri in second position followed Australian motorcyclist Chris Vermeulen and Casey Stoner came third.

Chris Vermeulen had decided wisely on a motorbike set up for the rain a lap earlier than most of opponents, which stood him in very good stead under the prevailing conditions and helped him win the race.

Drizzle turned into heavy rain 20 laps from the finish line, and the riders who were previously in the lead Sylvain Guintoli, Randy de Puniet and Toni Elias all crashed out of the race.

Chris Vermeulen is reported to have said: "When I saw all those riders on the ground I just tried to keep it together.

"(Deciding) when to come to the pits and change tyres was the hardest part. I must admit I followed my instincts, I did not really think."
