Australian superbike champ Troy Bayliss leads at Monza
Australian superbike champion rider Troy Bayliss made progress in his bid for a third World Superbike Championship crown when he claimed a pole position win for Sunday's two races at Monza in Italy.
Bayliss was the winner of the superpole qualifier on the Xerox Ducati with a lap of one minute 44.931 seconds, and he edged out German rider Max Neukirchner on the Alstare Suzuki.
Japan's Noriyuki Haga was in third place on the Yamaha Motor Italia bike in front of Carlos Checa.
Troy Bayliss said afterwards: "It's been a bit of a mixed weekend, we've been struggling a bit with the race tyre but we've worked hard, trying different things and finally it's come quite good."
And he added: "Tomorrow will see some tough racing, Max is consistent on the tyre and proving to be a real contender. It's very difficult to get away at Monza, I have a feeling it's going to be between Max, Nori and myself but I'm sure it's going to be more than that for the first eight laps."
