World Champion Niki Lauda praises new champion Fernando Alonso
Three-time World Champion, Niki Lauda, has hailed the new Champion, Fernando Alonso, as "the discovery of the season".
Niki Lauda says he is sure that the young Spaniard is a worthy
Champion. Fernando Alonso also recently picked up the Principe de
Asturis award for his outstanding performance this season and he
collected it in his hometown.
It is his countries highest sporting award and Fernando Alonso is the
youngest champion ever to receive it. In attendance at the ceremony
were two members of the Spanish royal family, the Queen Sofia and Crown
Prince Felipe.
24 year-old Renault driver Fernando Alonso, now a hero in his country,
looked overjoyed to receive the award, which has cycling great, Lance
Armstrong, and tennis legend, Martina Navratilova as some of its past
winners.
"I am going to do all I can to win again next year," Fernando Alonso shouted to the huge crowd.
"This is a day for you, not for me. It is a lot easier to drive at 300
kph knowing that you are not alone. I hope you never stop supporting
me."
Niki Lauda says he doesn't agree with those who believe Kimi Raikkonen
was a more worthy F1 Champion, and says Fernando Alonso did exactly
what was needed of him, and showed great skill and a strong
temperament.
"Alonso kept his head and scored the points he needed to, while McLaren
pushed like crazy and made costly errors." the 56 year-old Austrian
said.
