Singapore put on Formula One Grand Prix at night
Singapore will be putting on a Formula One Grand Prix in 2008, and it will be a first and a unique sporting event because the race will be staged at night.
The Singapore Grand Prix will be held in September or early October, it has been reported, and the drivers will be racing on a street circuit around the Marina Bay district.
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said: "Singapore is going to be the leader with the street race at night - we're excited about the idea."
However, the Singapore government have concerns over safety issues that need to be resolved still and Trade and Industry minister S. Iswaran explained: "Safety is of paramount concern to all of us,"
"Therefore, we will proceed with a night race only if the safety and operational requirements of all parties are fully met - if not, we will revert to a day race."
Singapore will be holding the event for five years, and Bernie Ecclestone can extend the deal for a further five years until 2017 if he feels it is a good idea.
