Renault boss Carlos Ghosn can't quell doubts about Formula One
Renault has failed to silence doubts about its ongoing commitment to
Formula One after its president Carlos Ghosn said the future of the
team would be decided on "year-on-year".
Carlos Ghosn said the 2005 champions would stay "if it is in Renault's interest".
And he added that Renault would review its position on a regular basis
after next year due to uncertainty about the new rules for 2008.
"At the moment, it is a good investment for Renault. As long as it
remains a good investment, we will stay. The day it is no longer, we
will go," Carlos Ghosn said.
Carlos Ghosn had already rejected claims that Renault might quit at the end of this year.
Speculation about Renault's future arose because of the
decision of leading driver Fernando Alonso, 24, who had become the
youngest-ever Formula One champion in 2005, to agree to join rival side
McLaren in 2007.
The Spanish driver said at the launch of the team's latest Formula One
car last week that he was defecting not because of money but because of
the confusion over the future with Renault.
The loss of key sponsor, the cigarette company Mild Seven at the end of
the year also added fuel to the fire regarding worries over the team's
ability to carry on competing.
