Renault are the first Formula One team to use Kers

RenaultRenault Formula One racing team have become the first team to confirm that they will be using the new energy storage and power boost system known as Kers in the first race of the season.

Kers works by saving energy that would have gone to waste while braking and it can provide drivers with a boost of an additional 80bhp for seven seconds each lap.

BMW had been the first to already have said they had the system ready to go, however, they didn't say if they intend using Kers in Australia on 29 March.

Kers should give teams that are using the new technology an advantage when it comes to overtaking because of the extra power they will have at their disposal.

However, due to the weight of the Kers and the problems with packaging it there will also be disadvantages as well as the benefits, and Williams, Toyota, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Force India and Brawn GP have all said that they will definitely not be using the new system.

McLaren and Ferrari have not said if they will be using Kers or not using it.
