Renault's Fernando Alonso's hopes of beating Ferrari hit by FIA court decision
Renault and Fernando Alonso's hopes of beating Ferrari's advance in the title battle have been dealt a blow after an innovative design on their car was ruled illegal by the FIA.
The court of appeal of Formula One's governing body, the FIA, ruled on Wednesday that the team's "mass damper" was contravening the sport's rules.
Renault now have to race in the remaining five Grands Prix of the season without using the system.
The FIA views the "mass damper," which is a counterweight mounted inside the nose of the car, as a movable aerodynamic device, even though it never comes into contact with the airflow around the car.
Fernando Alonso had a difficult race in Germany and it was the first time Renault had raced without the mass damper system since last year, and he only managed to finish fifth as Michael Schumacher won.
