Michael Schumacher may retire from Formula One
Seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher has said that he may retire from Formula One at the end of this year's season.
Michael Schumacher said he wanted to be sure that his Ferrari team
would be competitive before making a decision over his future in the
sport and he told the German magazine Der Spiegel: "If we want to
progress we need more staff.
"If I don't have the chance to win races and challenge for the title then I don't think I'll be very keen to extend my career."
In his interview with the publication, Michael Schumacher added: "In
Formula One you cannot afford to stand still and I want to know where
we're heading."
Michael Schumacher, whose Ferrari contract runs out at the end of 2006,
will be the oldest driver on the grid in the new season, having turned
37 earlier this month.
Michael Schumacher only won one race last year, in the US Grand Prix in
which only six cars started, and finished third in the standings, and
this was well behind Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.
It was a very poor showing from a man who has won 84 races in his
career and was unbeatable at the start of the century - winning five
titles in a row from 2000 to 2004 to add to his championships in 1994
and 1995.
