Mechanic Nigel Stepney faces Italian court over spygate case
Formula One racing mechanic Nigel Stepney was in court in Italy to be questioned over his part in what has been termed "spygate" and concerns a row involving McLaren and Ferrari teams.
McLaren had been discovered to possess technical data, which was the property of Ferrari, and legal action was taken although Formula One's governing body decided to draw a line under the case.
Nigel Stepney, who was the head of development at Ferrari in the past, is alleged to have given a 780-page technical document to former McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan, but his lawyer denied that he had done this.
Sonia Bartolini, on behalf of Nigel Stepney, however, admitted that her client had had contact with Mike Coughlan.
The court hearing was held in Modena, and prosecutor Giuseppe Tibis is reported to have said that Nigel Stepney was "co-operative and thorough".
McLaren manager Ron Dennis, chief executive Martin Whitmarsh, chief designer Mike Coughlan and engineering director Paddy Lowe will all have to attend the same court in the very near future.
