McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh glad they signed Fernando Alonso
McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh says his team's decision to sign Spanish driver Fernando Alonso is looking increasingly inspired.
Fernando Alonso, 25, who joins McLaren next season, is currently in top form for Renault and looks set to defend his Formula One drivers' title.
Martin Whitmarsh said: "I think he's a better driver now compared to when we signed him (in December). We are very happy with the progress he has made.
"Fernando's consistency is astounding and he has grown in stature."
And Martin Whitmarsh added: "We have mixed feelings about how well Fernando is driving at the moment.
"He was never one for making a lot of mistakes, but his performance this year has been quite incredible.
"It may not feel pleasant now but we are hoping it will feel pleasant this time next year."
Fernando Alonso, who won the British Grand Prix on Sunday, currently leads the drivers' standings by 23 points from Ferrari's Michael Schumacher.
