Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon joins Indycar team
Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon has ended the debate over whether
he will move to Formula One by signing for the Target Chip Ganassi
IndyCar team for 2006.
Dan Wheldon won the Indy Racing League championship with Andretti Green
Racing but could not come to terms with team owner Michael Andretti.
Englishman, Dan Wheldon, 27, will join 2003 IRL champion Scott Dixon at Ganassi.
"Scott and I already were talking that we want to make a big impact next year," Dan Wheldon said.
"That's a goal. I had a lot of success this season, and I'm looking to do the same.
"It will be a very exciting season in general. There will be a lot of
competitive cars, so we'll have to be on top of our game."
Dan Wheldon, who is already the IRL's joint-second most successful
driver in terms of wins, held talks with several Formula One teams over
a testing role next year with a view to a race seat in 2007.
BMW-Sauber were reportedly leading the chase, but he eventually decided to join Ganassi.
"I achieved a lot at Andretti Green Racing," Dan Wheldon said. "I came
to end of my contract, talked with Chip Ganassi and was excited by what
he had to say.
"For me, it's a new chapter. I'm not coming here to run second. I want
to win more races, more championships and more Indy 500s."
