Heikki Kovalainen concussed in Grand Prix crash
McLaren Formula One driver Heikki Kovalainen was miraculously not seriously injured in a 150mph crash during the Spanish Grand Prix, although he was suffering concussion when he was admitted to hospital.
26-year-old Finn, Heikki Kovalainen had been hit on the head in the accident, which was caused by a tyre losing air and he was rushed away for medical examination.
McLaren manager Ron Dennis revealed afterwards that although Kovalainen had concussion he had sustained no additional injuries and there was strong likelihood that he would be fit enough to compete in the Turkish race on 11 May.
Dennis added that although Heikki Kovalainen would be being kept in for observation: "The doctors are quite optimistic at this stage because there is no damage, bruising or bleeding."
When the crash happened there were serious concerns for Kovalainen because the cockpit of the car was buried under the tyre barrier and it had taken the rescue team 10 minutes to get him out.
Amazingly, Heikki Kovalainen gave the thumbs up to the crowd as he was carried on a stretcher into the waiting ambulance.
