France could be off the Formula One calendar
France could lose its Grand Prix and its place on the Formula One calendar next year for the first time in more than 50 years of Formula One racing history.
The French motor sport federation (FFSA) has decided to remove the Grand Prix at Magny-Cours from the schedule because there is no guarantee of success for the event.
The FFSA claimed that poor access to the Magny-Cours track, disappointing attendances and lack of accommodation have all been points that have helped them reach their decision, however, the situation would be reassessed at its next meeting in July.
If the Grand Prix is not held in 2008 it is nevertheless hoped that it would return to the racing calendar in 2009, but possibly at a new location.
Magny-Cours, which has hosted the race since 1991, has admittedly experienced problems raising funds for the Grand Prix, however, it's unusual for a race organiser to announce its event will not be on the Formula One calendar at this very early stage.
