Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton up for Laureus award
British Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton has been nominated for a Laureus award.
Lewis Hamilton, 22, who was born in Hertfordshire and who currently drives for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team has been nominated for the Breakthrough of the Year honour.
A panel of journalists from 128 countries chooses the nominees and then the Laureus Academy members in Barcelona select the winners. Lewis Hamilton's nomination has come about after McLaren signed him to partner world champion Fernando Alonso.
Laureus Academy member Emerson Fittipaldi commented about Lewis Hamilton saying: "Hamilton's arrival has certainly added a new dimension."
Many other sports stars have been nominated including tennis star Roger Federer for Sportsman of the Year, along with golf legend Tiger Woods and seven-times a Formula One champion Michael Schumacher.
Former Chelsea footballer Marcel Desailly has been chosen to be part of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
