Ferrari's Felipe Massa wins at Japanese Grand Prix
Ferrari's Brazilian driver Felipe Massa claimed a surprise pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix and stole the spotlight in the battle for the world championship.
Felipe Massa set a lap of one minute 29.599 seconds and beat teammate Michael Schumacher by 0.112secs.
Michael Schumacher's opponent Fernando Alonso of Renault was only the fifth fastest behind the two Toyotas of Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button's Honda was seventh behind Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella.
Fernando Alonso was just under 0.8secs slower than Felipe Massa, and Ferrari's pace suggests the Spanish driver will face a tough struggle in the race on Sunday.
It looks as if Renault have a tyre disadvantage to Ferrari, judging from the pace of the Toyotas.
The Japanese team use the same Bridgestone tyres as Ferrari but Renault are using Michelins.
Fernando Alonso's pace compared with the other Michelin teams is similar to at other races this season, but Bridgestone appears to have provided a big step forward for the drivers using their tyres.
