F1 driver Fernando Alonso says Spain is not a racist country
Spanish Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has spoken up in defence of his country saying that Spain is not racist, but that the abuse that fellow driver Lewis Hamilton was subjected to were isolated cases.
British driver Lewis Hamilton had been abused by spectators while testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona in February, however, Fernando Alonso thinks ther has been too much fuss made over the incident.
"I don't think this is a racist country and the fans aren't either. Whoever says there's racism in Spain is talking about isolated cases," Fernando Alonso was quoted by the Spanish newspaper AS as saying.
As a result of all the press generated by the incident, in which Lewis Hamilton was taunted by spectators with blacked-up faces, the sport's world governing body, the FIA, is starting an anti-racism campaign at April's Spanish Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso thinks they should drop the matter and he explained: "It was an isolated incident and the FIA or anyone saying that the Spanish fans are racists is laughable."
