Canadian racing driver Jacques Villeneuve retires from BMW Sauber and possibly from Formula One
Canadian racing driver Jacques Villeneuve has left BMW Sauber and this could be the end of his Formula One career.
Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve's contract was due to finish at the end of the season but has now been terminated early on by mutual consent.
Jacques Villeneuve, 35, did not race in the Hungarian Grand Prix and Polish test driver Robert Kubica, 21, replaced him.
Jacques Villeneuve won the world title in 1997 with Williams but says he has not had any offers for next season.
Jacques Villeneuve, who raced in 163 grands prix, said he was leaving due to a lack of assurances about his short-term future with BMW Sauber, however, reports suggested his absence was more a case of the team looking to the future with Kubica.
Robert Kubica finished in seventh place in Hungary before he was disqualified when his car was found to be underweight.
Robert Kubica had been given the drive at the Hungaroring because Jacques Villeneuve was still recovering from the after-effects of a crash in Germany.
