Bernie Ecclestone says the British Grand Prix goes to Donington
Formula One Supremo Bernie Ecclestone has backed the relocation of the British Grand Prix from Silverstone to Donington in Derbyshire from 2010 onward in a 10-year deal.
Silverstone had staged the race since 1987 and the British Racing Drivers' Club, who had negotiated the new arrangement, owns it.
Ecclestone is reported to have said: "We wanted a world class venue for F1, something teams and fans could be proud of. Donington's development plans will give us exactly that, a venue to put British motorsport back on the map."
But Ecclestone added that he was disappointed that the British government had not stepped in to help Silverstone to stay as the location for the race. Silverstone had been in dire need of improvements to bring it up to world class standards.
Donington's owners, Simon Gillett and Lee Gill, are very happy to have got the contract and have a five-year, £100m investment programme already lined up.
