Aguri Suzuki's Japanese team bid for Formula One
A new team led by the former F1 driver Aguri Suzuki has applied to join
the mighty ranks of Formula One in 2006. The Japanese team, to be known
as "Super Aguri Formula One", gave in their notification to the
International Automobile Federation ahead of the 15 November deadline.
"We have cleared all the hurdles up to this point," Aguri Suzuki said.
"There is a huge amount of work left but we plan to be on the grid in
2006."
The Honda-powered team would be the 11th on the grid if approved.
The experienced Aguri Suzuki, 45, won the Japanese kart and touring car
championships and drove in the Le Mans 24 Hours race before making his
F1 debut with Larrousse in 1988.
Having also raced with Zakspeed-Yamaha, Larrousse again and
Footwork/Arrows, he retired after sustaining a neck injury whilst
driving a Ligier at the Japanese Grand Prix of 1995.
Over the past few years he has been involved in promoting young
Japanese drivers and helping to establish Honda's Formula Dream in
Japan.
Two years ago he entered a team in the Indy Racing League in the US.
His latest outfit will be based in Tokyo but will also have an
operation at the former Arrows headquarters in Leafield, Oxfordshire.
