Venus Williams taken to the limit to beat Martina Hingis in Warsaw
Venus Williams fought hard to a 4-6 7-5 6-4 victory over Martina Hingis in Warsaw to reach the last eight of the J&S Cup.
American tennis star Venus Williams was already suffering a throat condition and she then suffered cramps in the final set and could barely move by the finish, and Swiss player Martina Hingis, the former world number one, came within two points of a win at 5-4 in the second set.
But Venus Williams recovered enough to take the set before cramps struck in the third. Venus Williams needed treatment three times and had to call on all her power and spirit to win.
Seventh seed Venus Williams needed physio at 1-1 after dropping her serve, again after breaking to love to lead 2-1, and then a third time when leading 3-2.
And when Martina Hingis broke her to love to level at 3-3 it looked as if Venus Williams's challenge was over and she relied on hitting out as hard as she could at any ball that came within her reach.
Her big forehand had already given Martina Hingis major problems, and in the desperate final stages of the game there were enough to prevent her getting control, and after an exchange of breaks to 4-4, a forced backhand error gave Venus Williams another break for 5-4 and she served out for the match.
