Venus Williams pulls out of Australian Open

venus williams Former world number one tennis star Venus Williams has had to withdraw from next week's Australian Open due to a wrist injury she sustained.

Venus Williams, 26, got through to the final of the event in 2003, losing out to younger sister Serena Williams, however, she has not managed to get past the fourth round at Melbourne Park since then.

Venus Williams, the world number 48, now joins world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne among the tennis stars who will be absent from the event.

Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova both pulled out from the Sydney International and are also now doubtful players.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams had problems due to injury throughout 2006 and played just a handful of events but withdrew from tournaments in Moscow and Stuttgart.

Venus Williams' younger sister Serena is currently making her comeback at the Hobart International after four months away due to a knee problem.
