Venus Williams is doubtful for Australian Open due to injury
Former world number one tennis star Venus Williams is now doubtful for the Australian Open after she injured her wrist.
Venus Williams, 26, has withdrawn from the Hopman Cup and battles a race against time to be recovered enough for the first Grand Slam of 2007, which begins on 15 January.
"She has been seeing the doctors and she is having a lot of trouble hitting her backhand," explained Hopman Cup director Paul McNamee and he added that the injury "has to cast a doubt" over her Australian Open chances.
Venus Williams has had injury problems throughout a disappointing 2006, playing just a small number of events and having to pull out of tournaments in Moscow and Stuttgart.
Ashley Harkleroad takes Venus Williams' place in the Hopman Cup, which commences on 30 December in Perth.
Venus Williams' withdrawal is the latest blow for the event and Germany, who were called up to replace South Korea, withdrew after Nicolas Kiefer also suffered a wrist injury.
