US tennis star Serena Williams beats Neuza Silva from Portugal

serena williamsAmerican tennis star Serena Williams has just beaten Portugal's Neuza Silva in their match at Wimbledon.

27-year-old Williams defeated her opponent with a 6-1 7-5 score and she did so in just one hour 13 minutes.

It was the first women's match on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, and although at times the 26-year-old Portuguese tennis star, who is world number 154 in the current ratings, played well in some moments of the game she was no match for Williams.

At one stage Williams gained an easy 4-0 lead against Silva.

Serena Williams is in the opposite half of the draw to her tennis-playing sister Venus and current world number one in the sport Dinara Safina.

Serena Williams now goes forward to play against either Lucie Safarova or Jarmila Groth in the second round of the tournament at Wimbledon.
