US Open Champion Kim Clijsters probably wont defend title at Flushing Meadows
US Open champion Kim Clijsters probably wont be defending her title at Flushing Meadows later this month due to an injured wrist.
Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters withdrew from the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Wednesday when she was leading Stephanie Dubois 6-1 2-3 and an MRI scan on Thursday showed she could be sidelined for at least two months, which means that Clijsters would also miss out on the Fed Cup final against Italy.
"Kim is completely disillusioned," a statement on her website says.
"She will definitely not play any tennis next week and will most likely be out of action for the following two months," the statement continues.
Kim Clijsters won her only Grand Slam title to date in New York last year, and this year's US Open commences on 28 August.
On Wednesday, Kim Clijsters, who also fought her way back from a career-threatening wrist injury last year, said: "It was hurting and then I slipped and landed on it in the worst possible position."
