UK tennis star Jamie Baker beats Daniel Koellerer
British tennis star Jamie Baker has gotten through to the main draw of the Australian Open by beating Austrian player Daniel Koellerer 6-4 6-4 in his final qualifying game.
Although Daniel Koellerer played well, it was 21-year-old Jamie Baker who won in the end.
Daniel Koellerer hit an under-arm serve in the fifth game of the first set, and he had a time-out for injury when Jamie Baker was one point away from breaking in the second, however, Jamie Baker was well primed for his opponent's tactics.
Jamie Baker explained: "It was difficult, but I was expecting it as the players told me in the locker room how he tries to bend the rules. The best way for me to go about it was not to give him any energy and focus on my game."
Jamie Baker proudly added: "I'm delighted - it is a huge step in my career to do that as I have beaten three really good players to qualify."
Jamie Baker, who will be part of the British Davis Cup team in Argentina in February, was sure his efforts at qualifying for the Heineken Open in New Zealand last week had helped him with his latest victory.
