Tennis star Venus Williams battled to beat Akiko Morigami
Tennis star and five-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams faced a struggle to defeat Japanese player Akiko Morigami in the first round of the Memphis International but finally came through 6-1 2-6 6-4. It was only the third time Venus Williams had played since Wimbledon.
Born in Lynwood, California, Venus Williams, 26, is a former World No. 1 ranked female tennis player and the older sister of fellow tennis star Serena Williams but recently her career has been hampered by a wrist injury she suffered at last year's French Open.
"I didn't know how I would feel because my wrist was still feeling really sore in practice," said Venus Williams and she added:
"But I feel like my wrist is going to be fine. I'll probably be a little sore tomorrow but hopefully I'll be fine."
Following a too early attempt at playing again she had made in Luxembourg last October, Venus Williams is now intent on her comeback so it was important to win and she explained:
"I needed to win because I am not playing next week," and Venus Williams added: "I didn't want to come here and play one match and then have to wait two weeks to play another so it's good for me."
