Tennis star Serena Williams continues her comeback defeating Maria Kirilenko
Tennis star Serena Williams continued her comeback after injury with a 6-2 6-1 defeat of 11th seed Maria Kirilenko in the first round of the Los Angeles Open.
Serena Williams is playing her third game since returning after six months away from sport with a knee injury.
"I'm slowly but surely going in the direction I want to go," said Serena Williams, who claimed her victory in 66 minutes with her eighth ace of the night.
"I missed a lot of first serves, I definitely can improve on that," Serena Williams said.
Second seed Russian star Nadia Petrova, who is also staging a comeback, was beaten 6-3 6-2 by Spanish player Virginia Ruano Pascual in the second round.
Nadia Petrova, 24, was playing her second tournament since making a recovery from a hip injury, which kept her away from Wimbledon and she said it was the mental rather than the physical side of the game, which gave her problems on Tuesday.
"The problem is in my head," Nadia Petrova said. "I'm not on the court, I'm somewhere next to it.
