Tennis star Serena Williams battled Michelle Larcher de Brito
American tennis star Serena Williams struggled against 15-year-old Michelle Larcher de Brito before she managed to get control and go on to win at the Bank of the West Classic.
Williams lost out in the first set against Larcher de Brito before winning with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 score.
Williams also made eight unforced errors in her first 12 points but she said afterwards that it was encouraging to have managed to have fought her way back to win.
26-year-old Serena Williams was playing her first match since she was defeated in the Wimbledon final by her sister Venus.
Williams' father Richard, who was watching the game briefly got out of his seat in a corner box after seeing his daughter struggle so much.
Serena Williams' opponent Larcher de Brito, who comes from Portugal, is only ranked 226 in the world so if she had won it would have been a terrible defeat for the American star.
