Tennis star Mary Pierce struggled before winning at the Acura Classic in San Diego
Defending champion Mary Pierce had to struggle before she managed to win through to the third round of the Acura Classic in San Diego on Wednesday.
Mary Pierce, 31, who has not taken part in tennis since February after injuring ligaments in her foot, edged past Austrian player Sybille Bammer 6-1 6-7 7-6.
Top seed Kim Clijsters easily beat Samantha Stosur 6-1 6-2, however, third seed Nadia Petrova crashed out 6-3 6-7 6-2 to her compatriot Anna Chakvetadze.
Mary Pierce struggled to find her ground for much of the game and she had lost three match points with forehand errors in the second set tie-breaker to lose 9-7.
Mary Pierce said: "The most important thing is I know I can play without hurting myself."
Mary Pierce got through to two Grand Slam finals last year, at the French and US Opens, and she said she still has some major goals left to achieve.
"The only thing I haven't done is been ranked number one, made the final of Wimbledon or win it, and I don't have an Olympic medal - those are the three things I want," Mary Pierce explained.
