Tennis star Mario Ancic defeated at Paris Masters
Croat tennis star Mario Ancic's hopes of reaching the season-ending Masters Cup were dashed after he dropped to a 6-3 6-3 defeat by Nikolay Davydenko at the Paris Masters.
Mario Ancic would have overtaken James Blake for the eighth and final qualifying place if he had beaten Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals.
Tommy Haas, who has to claim the title to move above James Blake, defeated Marat Safin 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 6-3 to make the semis.
Nikolay Davydenko will next face Tommy Robredo, who earlier had beaten Finnish player Jarkko Nieminen.
Tie-breaks decided the first two sets of a close contest and the decider set was also a tight one with Jarko Nieminen surviving three match points at 5-3 down.
Tommy Robredo, who qualified for the event in Shanghai by making the last eight in Paris, won on his fourth match point when Jarko Nieminen went long with a forehand.
