Tennis star Maria Sharapova beats Stephanie Dubois in Birmingham
Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova won against Stephanie Dubois on day one of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham in the UK.
22-year-old Sharapova, who has recently made her return to sport after time away while she was recovering from a shoulder problem, had actually won at the Edgbaston Priory Club twice before.
This time she claimed a 6-4 6-2 victory against her Canadian opponent.
Sharapova had been a winner at Edgbaston back in 2004 and 2005 and this year she is a main attraction of the event, especially because she has been away from tennis for some time due to her injury problem.
Sharapova made her debut performance at Edgbaston in 2003 when she was just 17 years old and, after getting through the qualifying rounds, she had made it to the semi-finals of the event.
After her past success in Birmingham it is good to see that Sharapova is in winning form again.
