mauresmo Australian Open tennis champion Amelie Mauresmo was defeated in the last eight of the Sydney International by Serbian star Jelena Jankovic on Wednesday.

Jelena Jankovic followed up her success in the Auckland Classic with a 7-5 6-0 win against the French world number three Amelie Mauresmo.

And former Australian Open runner-up Kim Clijsters breezed her way past Israeli player Shahar Peer 6-2 6-1 to join Chinese star Li Na in the semi-finals.

Amelie Mauresmo, who is likely to be seeded number two when she defends her Australian Open title in Melbourne, broke Jelena Jankovic's opening service game but after that she was struggling in the game.

Jelena Jankovic claimed her second WTA title in New Zealand last weekend and opened her Sydney campaign with a three-set win against Martina Hingis.
