Tennis player James Blake wins in Europe
James Blake has brought his red-hot game to Europe. The former Harvard
star won for the 20th time in his last 23 matches in ATP events,
beating Paradorn Srichaphan, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), yesterday to win the
Stockholm Open for his first European title.
The sixth-seeded American was playing his first ATP event since
reaching the US Open quarterfinals, where he lost to Andre Agassi. ''It
was very important to me because half the tour is in Europe," said
James Blake, whose third career title came two months after he won at
New Haven.
James Blake raced ahead, 4-0, in the first set at Royal Tennis Hall.
He was threatened on serve only once when he fell behind in the fifth
game but he eventually held serve with an ace and broke Paradorn
Srichaphan again.
Paradorn Srichaphan, the 2002 Stockholm Open champion, broke with a volley to lead, 5-4, in the second set.
James Blake broke back in the next game and the players held to force
the tiebreaker and he won it on his third match point when Paradorn
Srichaphan hit a forehand long.
