Switzerland's Martina Hingis beats India's Sania Mirza

martinahingis Former world number one tennis player Martina Hingis won but it wasn't an impressive performance as she struggled to a straight sets victory against India's Sania Mirza at the Dubai Duty-Free Open.

Martina Hingis won 6-3 7-5 against an opponent who also failed to play with any consistency in front of an excitable sell-out crowd.

Swiss player Martina Hingis took the first set on her fourth set point after warding off a break point at 5-3.

In the second set, she broke three times but allowed Sania Mirza to level each time before sealing the win.

"I felt I had the game under control and whenever I needed it I was able to step it up," said martina Hingis.

Fifth seed Nadia Petrova from Russia fell 6-4 6-1 to fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko, but there were victories for seventh seed Italian Francesca Schiavone and Russia player Svetlana Kuznetsova.
