Swiss tennis star Roger Federer equals Jimmy Connors' record
Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has caught up with and matched the legendary Jimmy Connors' record as the longest player staying at world number one.
Roger Federer, 25, born in the town of Binningen near Basel, Switzerland to Swiss-German Robert Federer and South African Lynette Federer, currently lives in Oberwil in his home country and he has really given his country something to be proud of because he has joined Jimmy Connors as the second tennis star to hold the top position for 160 consecutive weeks.
Catching up with Jimmy Connors is an incredible achievement for Roger Federer because during his amazing career, Jimmy Connors won a record 109 men's singles titles as well as 15 doubles titles and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island in 1998. Jimmy Connors has his own star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
Roger Federer's reign began on 4 February, 2004, and so strong is his lead in the rankings he is sure to hold on to his position for many months yet to come.
Roger Federer is confident he will now go on to beat Jimmy Connors' record and he said: "I think it's one of the most important records that I'll beat, perhaps even the most significant."
