Jimmy Connors was also the world number one player a further eight times during his career.
Now Roger Federer, 25, ovetakes Jimmy Connors as the first man to hold the number one spot for 161 weeks in a row.
"I've been looking forward to this day and I'm very excited," Roger Federer said proudly, however, paying tribute to Jimmy Connors, he went on to add: "He's still got the record for most titles (109 to Federer's 46) which I don't think will ever be eclipsed."
