Spanish tennis star Tommy Robredo wins first Masters title
Spanish tennis star Tommy Robredo beat Radek Stepanek to win the first Masters Series title of his career in Hamburg on Sunday.
Tommy Robredo recently broke into the world's top 10 and added to his success with a 6-1 6-3 6-3 win over Czech Radek Stepanek.
Due to rain they had to play under the centre court roof but Tommy Robredo broke Radek Stepanek twice in each of the first two sets and a backhand winner brought the break in the third for a decisive 5-3 lead.
"I am so pleased to see my name up there among all the great players who have won this - I am very, very proud," said a delighted Tommy Robredo.
With many of the leading players not present, most notably Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Hamburg presented a fantastic opportunity for those who had still to win one of the game's big prizes.
Tommy Robredo went into the final with a 3-0 record against Radek Stepanek and the Czechoslovakian player clearly chose a change of tactics, serve-volleying far more than usual.
This new tactic failed to deter Tommy Robredo's well-grooved baseline game, however, and he broke in the fourth and sixth games on his way to winning the first set.
Tommy Robredo then broke again in the first game of the second and avoided a lone break point in game eight.
Two more chances slipped past Radek Stepanek in the third set and, when Tommy Robredo broke for 5-3, the game was over.
Tommy Robredo wrapped up his victory with a solid service game before he celebrated his triumph by ripping off his shirt and throwing it into the fans.
