Serena Williams is out of the East West Bank Classic

serena williamsAmerican tennis star Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles on Tuesday due to an injured knee.

26-year-old Serena Williams decided in her practice session that it was hurt too badly to carry on and so she joined her sister Venus, Lindsay Davenport and Svetlana Kuznetsova, who are also sidelined.

22-year-old British number four Melanie South, who will face the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova on Wednesday, will replace Williams in the event. It represents a lucky break for South because she had lost out in the qualifier game.

Williams will now concentrate on recovering her fitness well enough to take part in the American Olympics team in the Beijing Games, which are coming up later in August.

"It's a huge disappointment for me to be unable to play the East West Bank Classic in my hometown of LA," said Williams sadly.
