Serena Williams bows outTennis star Serena Williams has had to pull out of her last two scheduled tournaments of the season in the hope of being healthy again in time for 2006. She will miss next week's event in Zurich, Switzerland, and the Advanta Championships that begin October 31st in Philadelphia.
She's been troubled by problems with her left ankle and knee for months and was able to play only 28 matches in 2005.
Williams missed the French Open, became upset in the third round at Wimbledon, and lost out to her older sister Venus in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. She hasn't played since losing her opener at the China Open to 127th-ranked Sun Tiantian on September 21st.
In a statement released by the WTA Tour she said, "My doctors and trainers have advised me that my leg needs to fully recover in order for me to be able to play at the level that I'm accustomed to playing."
She's slipped now from No. 1 to 11th position in the current tour rankings. But she plans a comeback.
"I'm going to be busy these next several weeks rehabbing, training and getting healthy so that I can play my very best for myself, the fans, tournaments and sponsors in 2006," she said.
