Serbian tennis star Jelena Jankovic beats Elena Dementieva
Serbian tennis star Jelena Jankovic made a surprise win against fourth seed Elena Dementieva and became the first player to reach the US Open semi-finals.
Jelena Jankovic, 21, the 19th seed from Serbia, beat the 2004 finalist 6-2 6-1 in just 62 minutes.
Jelena Jankovic will now face Justine Henin-Hardenne or Lindsay Davenport for a final spot.
Jelena Jankovic, who ousted Venus Williams at Wimbledon, had already beaten sixth seed and former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and ninth seed Nicole Vaidisova at this year's US Open.
The manner of her win over Elena Dementieva was all the more surprising because she had lost in three sets when they played earlier on this summer in Los Angeles.
"It's amazing," said Jelena Jankovic, who was playing in the last eight of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Elena Dementieva, 24, accepted her defeat and said she had been completely outplayed by Jelena Jankovic.
"She was playing great from the beginning to the end," said Elena Dementieva.
